The dielectric horn antenna consists of a metal waveguide (1) connected to a dielectric tube (3) that blends into a dielectric horn (2). a dielectric rod (3) (or tube) is inserted into the metal waveguide and projects into the dielectric tube. This rod reduces the antenna's side lobes and increases its gain. The rod tapers as it passes into the dielectric tube and is pointed (10) at the end lying inside the metal waveguide. A metal ring (7) is attached to the outside of the metal guide at lambda /4 from the horn end (8) of the metal guide to reflect surface waves originating from this end. The horn is closed by a dielectric disc (5). The rod is enclosed in a spaced dielectric tube.
