A communications system uses a central relay station suspended from a balloon to transmit from one ground based unit to another. The central station is suspended from a balloon at an approximate height of 100m. A parabolic reflector and a rotating directional antenna serve for signal transmission and reception. The balloon is cable connected to a truck providing electrical power. The directional antenna emits call signals in coded binary form to identify each 2-5 degrees of position. If one station wishes to establish contact with another, the central unit receives signals during the time the directional antenna is in the sector and re-transmits. Similar connections may be established between any two stations within the operating range.
