Grid gate has top and bottom stringers and bars between. The bars (4) stand in planes which are mutually offset by more than one bar thickness and are hinged to both top (3) and bottom stringers (2). The bottom stringer is anchored to the ground though the top stringer can move to the side as guided by the hinged bars and at the same time lower so as to fold the bars down onto the bottom stringer in order to open the gate, or vice versa to close it. - Pref. the top stringer presents a hollow section open downwards and the bottom stringer is a hollow section open upwards so that together they produce a box to accommodate the bars when these are folded down for opening the gate. The lower stringer should be sunk into the ground far enough to lie level with this when the bars are down and the gate opened. A drive (10) should be fitted and linked to the top stringer (3) or one of the gate bars (4) for the re-closing movement.
