The filter portion is preferably composed of agglomerated or sintered metal particles, e.g. powders or fibres of nickel, aluminium, silver, gold, stainless steel, bronze, iron, or mixtures or alloy thereof. The filter may be cleaned by washing with a solvent such as alcohol. In a cigarette holder with mouthpiece 2 the filtering means comprises a metal socket 1 presenting an exterior surface to atmosphere and a central filter disc 4 in contact with the socket. When applied to a pipe the filter disc is interposed between portions of the stem, and its cylindrical surface is exposed to atmosphere. The filter may also be fitted to a cigarette.
