Apparatus for analysing microscopic particles of different types, and recognising a number of different parameters of each particle. The apparatus comprises a device for repeatedly illuminating each of the particles with a sequence of pulses of light; an assembly for forming an image of the particle illuminated by each light pulse; a scanning structure for separately scanning each image; and a mechanism for producing a separate data output from each sequentially scanned image, each data output being capable of representing a different one of the parameters of the particles. The scanning structure comprises a raster mode scanning member for the separate scanning of each sequential image in a normal raster mode.
