FRICTION DUSTS FROM CASHEW NUT SHELL OIL

1294121 Aryl borate-aldehyde resins; compositions BP CHEMICALS Ltd 4 Feb 1970 [13 Feb 1969] 7826/69 Heading C3R Resin powders suitable for use in making friction elements are produced by (a) reacting an aldehyde with a borate of a phenolic component comprising at least 5% of cashew nut shell liquid and (b) grinding the resin product. The balance of the phenolic component may comprise other phenols such as phenol itself, cresols, xylenols and dihydroxybenzenes. The aldehyde may be formaldehyde. The resin is usually condensed to an infusible state. In examples the borate is prepared from phenol, cashew nut shell liquid and boric acid in the presence of toluene. The product is reacted with paraformaldehyde and the resin so produced compounded with asbestos and barytes to make friction elements.
