Gas mixture, pref. resulting from the burning of alkyl iodides in an oxide hydrogenation process and contg. iodine vapour and a 10-20 fold molar excess of NH3 as a reducing agent (and opt. a 10-20 fold molar excess of O2 w.r.t. iodine) is heated at 300-1000 degrees C. and then quenched with water at 70 degrees C.
