The mains voltage is simultaneously connected via a rectifier to the defective wire of the cable and via a second rectifier with polarity opposed to that of the first one to a sound wire of the cable. The two wires are connected together at the distant end of the cable. The rectifiers can be thyristors. Control electrodes on the thyristors are connected to switch gear programmed for burning. The advantage of using thyristors is that a dosed emission of burning energy and control of extraction of energy from the mains are permitted, so as to ensure that admissible values are not exceeded.
