Coherent radiation of mode purity and modulated with a high bit rate is produced using two optically coupled, but separately energisable injection layers. The first injection laser (1) of high optical quality and high spectral purity of its output radiation is continuously under direct current in such manner as to be energisable above its threshold value. The second injection laser (2) of lower optical quality, as compared with the first laser, is on one side biased by a direct current and additionally energised by a modulation current, superposed to this direct current. The two lasers are at negligible spacing and the radiation emitted by the first laser active zone (10) appears mostly at the laser active zone (20) of the second laser.
