Process for determining the water content of a liq. mixt. consists of taking a measured quantity of the mixt. and placing it in a gas tight container of known vol. To this is then added a reagent which converts the H2O present to a vapour and the increase in pressure which results is used as a measure for the water content. The liq. is placed inside the vessel, the reagent added by means of a dish which floats on the liq. surface and the vessel then sealed. The reagent and liq. mixt. are mixed by moving the vessel. A pressure gauge or other method of pressure measurement is fitted to the vessel. Used to measure the water content of liqs. Specifically to measure the water content of lubricating oils in i.c. engines. This is normally changed when the water contact rises above a certain value. Analytical determination of this cumbersome and generally oil is changed before necessary. System described gives simple method which can give rapid determination and save oil by increasing the time between oil changes.
