Prepn. of 2,3-dibromopropanol, (I), are free from tribromopropane, by reacting allyl alcohol with Br2 in an aq. 40-50wt. % concn. CaBr2 soln. (I) is useful as (i) starting material for organic synthesis; (ii) flame-proofing agent for plastics, opt. after its reaction with P halides. Allyl alcohol bromination in CaBr2 soln. leads to prodn. of (I) contg. 0.1 (esp. 0.03) wt. % tribromopropyl)-phosphate. Reaction pref. takes place at 10-30 degrees C. Allyl alcohol and Br2 are added to CaBr2 soln., with strong stirring so that reaction mixt. contains CaBr2 soln., allyl alcohol and Br2 in wt. ratio 100:112:309. The quantity of the 2 simultaneously added reactants is equiv.
