Contact plate for gas-liquid contact columns - e.g. for rectification, absorption, washing, esp. with thermally sensitive materials

The plate consists of a perforated circular disc. The perforations are in the form of slots which have domed covers. Gas passes upwards through the slots and is compelled by the covers to flow tangentially and at an angle to the surface of the disc in one direction. The side of the disc on which the liq. is carried is provided with baffle plates in the form of Archimedean spirals diverging from one another from the centre of the plate. The baffles cause the liq. to flow in the same direction as the gas leaving the slots. Exceptionally uniform liq distribution is achieved over a wide range of operating conditions. The system is particularly advantageous for large dia. columns where bad distribution and wave formation are often encountered.
