An h.f. clock generator using a quartz crystal provides high accuracy and stability and a well defined starting condition. A short impulse starting signal (S1) is applied to a d.c. source (1) and a step input is generated (2) to activate a quartz crystal (3). The series resonance coupling of the quartz crystal generates the required clock frequency which is amplified (4) to provide a square wave output (1a). The circuit exhibits a starting characteristic such that quartz crystal output rises from zero amplitude to a maximum value when the step input is generated. Once started, the series resonance circuit continues to operate at a precise frequency.
