Alkenylphenol polymers are made by cationic polymerisation of alkenylphenols in presence of a nitrile using a cationic polymerisation initiator, the nitrile being a satd. aliphatic mononitrile or an aromatic nitrile of b.pt. below 200 degrees C at 760 mmHg. and the concn. of the alkenylphenol in the nitrile soln. is 1-50 wt. % of the nitrile. High m.wt. alkenyl phenol polymers can be prepd. with good reproducibility from a homogeneous soln. in high yield, the prods. being useful starting materials for producing thermosetting resins, high M.W. electrolytic substance, electroconductive treating agent, ion exchange membrane or glass fibre reinforced composite material.
