The anti-fouling device for optically transparent bodies in water, esp. seawater uses ultrasonic with transmission or emission of the vibrations by the body surface. The window in a sensor unit is faced by an identical one backed by a reflector in a water-permeable frame fixed to the instrument. Waves from an ultrasonic generator of 20-100 KHz; emitting for 1-120 secs. at intervals of 0.5-24 hrs, are symmetrically divided by a reflector in the bottom of the frame midway between the bodies and reflected onto them. This causes evenly distributed vibration of the surfaces, preventing any growth without affecting the passage of light waves. The bodies are pref. of cavitation resistant material, e.g. sapphire.
