Preheating fuel for IC engine - using exhaust gas passed through heat exchanger to preheat air fuel mixture before it enters cylinder

The engine has a cylinder (38) with a sparking plug (51) supplied from a distributor (43). Air is drawn in through a filter (13) and mixed with fuel oil in a carburettor (12). The air fuel mixture passes through a heat exchanger (5) in which it is heated by a stream of exhaust gas also flowing through the heat exchanger. The heated air fuel mixture is then admitted into the cylinder (38) before the igniting spark is made between the electrodes of the plug (51). The exhaust (52) from the cylinder flows through the heat exchanger (5) before passing to the silencer (53) and being discharged to atmosphere. A separate intake (8) with petrol as a fuel is used for starting purposes. This mixture does not need preheating.
