A pivot-mounted idler gear is used to effect direction of rotation changeover in a tape cassette with a single motor drive unit. The bi-directional motor is mounted in a fixed position and transmits rotary motion (1) to one of two gears (3, 4) coupled to the drive capstans. An idler gear (2) is mounted on a pivoted beam (5) and has a simple spring clutch to provide light contact between a felt disc and the beam. When the motor gear (1) moves in one direction motion is transmitted to one capstan gear (4). Reversing the motor rotation causes the beam to move against another stop to cause the second output gear (3) to be engaged.
