The electro-mechanical rotating disc timer consists of a timing disc (1) driven by a central shaft (2). The disc carries a number of equally-spaced markers around its periphery (4a-g) plus a single reference marker (3). The markers comprise a permanent magnet pole-pieces or LED's. Two detectors (6) are aligned with the inner ring of timing markers and the reference marker. The two sets of electrical signals are taken via inverters to the inputs of a shift register. The rotating mechanical parts may be run at higher speed, with greater timing accuracy than existing electro-mechanical units.
