Artificial heart valve comprises a maid body (22) with an inner ring wall (23) surrounding a passage (24) for blood, and a plate (29) which moves relative to the passage between an open position, allowing flow in one direction, and a closed position limiting flow in the other direction. The plate is freely rotatable when moving between positions, and has a centre hole (35) and a continuous peripheral edge coacting with the main body when limiting blood flow. The plate is offset in its open position. It is held by a rod (37) with a section extending through the centre hole, coacting with a drive progressively moving the plate to the closed position in response to fall in pressure of blood flowing through the passage.
