In a nuclear fuel rod with a plenum for a filling gas and fission gases and increase in the vol. of the fuel, the filling gas contains an added gas (mixt.) with a higher pressure, Pg and thermal conductivity than the filling gas. Pef. the fuel consists of a carbide fuel with He bonding, fuel oxides and nitrides or vibrated or kernel fuels, esp. UC2-PuC2 with a U235 enrichment of 93% and with 15% Pu. The plenum is a gap between the filling and the tubular sheath. The gas added can be He, Ne, Ar, N2 etc. and the gas pressure Pg in the plenum can be adjusted to 1 to over 12 at. The additive overcomes the problems associated with poor heat transfer.
