Thread coil has a main thread coil and a reserve thread supply including spool which is interchangeably mounted in a holder of an open-end spinning machine. A reserve changing unit is provided whereby the thread, after its clamping by the clamping point which rotates with the spool, it changed along a path to the side of the main path. The reserve changing unit has a thread separator in the form of, for example, a razor blade for sepg. the thread between the clamping point and a thread suction nozzle. The changing unit has a hand-controlled component which can be fastened on the thread coiling unit.
