Sepn. of straight-chain hydrocarbons and for unsatd. non-cyclic hydrocarbons from mixts. with branched and/or atd. non-cyclic hydrocarbons, comprises adsorption of the former on active carbon from fossil or react bituminous fuels, whose total micropore volume (measured with methanol) of pores 100 angstroms is 6-16cm3/100 g., of pores 3 angstroms 5cm3/100 g. and of pores 7 angstroms 3cm3/100 g. Used for sepn. n-paraffins, e.g. up to C9 or up to C18, from petroleum fractions to raise the octane value of the residue or to obtain raw materials for biodegradable detergents, plasticisers, waxes and proteins. Better separating efficiency is obtd. than with known molecular sieves or active carbon, with less cracking or polymerising activity at elevated temps, e.g. decomposition of propane is not caused below 600 degrees C in comparison with 300-400 degrees C on zeolites. Good acid resistance and low affinity for stream, giving prolonged life. High hardness and easy moulding to shape reduce pressure loss in the adsorption bed.
