A linear movement inductive displacement transducer with a non-linear input output characteristic depends on the inductance change caused in a single winding round a shaped ferrite core when an electrically conductive ring is moved along the winding. Basically, an E-shaped ferrite core (10) has a winding (12) on its centre shank (11) and an electrically conductive ring (13) moves along this winding, around it but not in contact with it, as the movement to be measured occurs. The winding inductance - monitored by a circuit - changes as this happens, with the non-linear characteristic required. Different shapes of ferrite core, a moving cylinder rather than a ring, an array of windings and other variations are presented.
