The design of a ship's propeller is based on the fact that its helical shape is determined by the oscillating vortex of water displaced by it. This has a wavelength which increases regularly. The amplitude of this oscillation, which is a function of the wavelength, gives the same volume of displacement of water per wavelength. The speed of flow of the displaced water remains constant for each arbitrary cross section of th displaced volume.
