New benzofuranyl N-methylcarbamates are of formula (I). In the formula, X is O or S; R' is alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, opt. substd. phenyl or phenylalkyl; R2 is H or CH3; and n is O or 1. (I) are pesticides useful as insecticides, acaricides and nematocides. They are well tolerated by plants, and toxicity towards warm-blooded animals is low. In an example, in a test in which cabbage plants strongly infested with Myzus persicae were sprayed to runoff with a dispersion of the test cpd., a 0.1% dispersion of (I; X=O, n= 0, R'=R2=CH3) gaive 100% kill of the aphid and a 0.01% dispersion gave 70% kill; a 0.1% dispersion of the known cpd. 1-naphthyl N-methylcarbamate gave only 80% kill and a 0.01% dispersion had no effect. Specific cpds. (I) include 2,2-dimethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-7-yl N-methyl-N-acetoxymethylcarbamate.
