The beam is used to press a workpiece against the abrasive belt of a belt polishing machine and is mounted on an elongated support. The support carries several adjusting cylinders (25), which act against an elastic strip or against a hose shaped cushion (18). A second elastic strip (22) is mounted below the cushion. A mat (23) made from damping material lies against this elastic strip. The mat has a low friction surface which lies against the back of the abrasive belt. The hose shaped cushion, the second elastic strip and the damping mat, form pressure units (17), connected to the adjusting cylinders by a holding strip (28) made from channel section. Pressure units for the belt can be easily mounted on this channel section.
