New quinoxaline 1,4-dioxide derivs. are of formula (I):- (where R1 and R2 are H, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy; R3 and R4 are alkyl, or NR3R4 is an opt. substd. opt. unsatd. heterocyclic gp) (I) have antibacterial activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and negative bacteria. They can be used in human and veterinary medicine, as animal growth promoters, and as industrial bactericides (e.g. as preservatives for polymers, lubricants, leather, paper, wood and foodstuffs and for water treatment). Unlike known 2-methyl-3-carbamoyl-quinoxaline 1,4-dioxides, they have low toxicity and good solubility in H2O and organic solvents. Pref. (I) is 2-methyl-3-(dimethylaminomethylcarbamoyl)-quinoxaline 1,4-dioxide, e.g. from 2-methyl-3-carbamoyl-quinoxaline 1,4-dioxide, paraformaldehyde and dimethylamine.
