Refractory linings contg. carbon, prodn. - from refractory oxide, pitch binder and amino amide or amidine pressing aid, for lining steel converters

Prodn. of carbon-contg. refractory materials is effected using (a) dolomite and/or magnesite or silica as refractory material, (b) a pitch with a high softening point as binder, and (c) an amino-amide or amino-amidine as pressing aid. Components (c) is fatty acid amine-amide, a fatty acid polyamino-amide, a cyclised fatty acid (poly)amino-diamidine, and/or their quaternisation products. It is dissolved in the binder and/or added to the mixt. in the form of a soln. and/or in a solid and/or liq. form. Component (c) improves the mouldability of the materials, (allowing pressed blocks to be produced at lower pressures and temps). while only slightly decreasing the viscosity of the pitch. On heat treatment of the blocks, the pitch forms a low-porosity coke residue.
