Insert protects the surface of a metallurgical vessel, where the surface is exposed to a stream of molten metal, esp. in a tundish used for continuous casting. The insert prevents the splashing or spray from the molten metal, and consists of a grid made of thermally-insulating refractory material; the grid has a honeycomb of channels open at both top and bottom. The grid insert is pref. 10-200 (esp. 40-100)mm thick, and has webs which taper upwards or downwards, so the holes in the grid taper downwards or upwards. Used e.g. in the continuous castin of steel, to eliminate splashing from a falling stream of molten steel without conducting much heat out of the melt, and also preventing the erosion of the surface of the tundish base.
