The pusher-lighter unit wit an interlock coupling comprises a lighter with a recess in its stern into which the pusher fits. Horizontal slots shaped to take the pushers rubbing strake are cut into the recess plating, at several levels to allow for lighter draught variations. Instead of being cut into the hull plating, the slots can be formed by fitting appropriately shaped, spaced horizontal rails to the recess. for a tighter connection, the pusher can be equipped to expand the rubbing strake into the slot.
