The seal for a longitudinally movable rod (3) of non-circular cross-section comprises a support ring (1) having at its inside a resilient lip (2) fitting the profile of the rod cross-section. Pref. the ring has an outer periphery which is cylindrical to fit a bore in surrounding housing. The lip is that it engages the whole of the rod profile with uniform pressure. The lip may be originally of circular form and may be fitted into a ring whose interior contour follows that of the rod at a spacing allowing for the introduction of the lip.
