A tampon, esp. for feminine hygiene, has a recovery thread drawn through the wadding once or twice by a needle. The improvement comprises the withdrawal thread being laid on the surface of the fleece, and being bounded inseparably at one or two points to the fleece where it runs parallel with the long edged of the wadding. The remainder of the thread is turned so as to run parallel to the short edges of the piece and extend beyond the long edge. Pref. the recovery thread is bonded tothe fleece at the start and finish of the section parallel to the long edges. An adhesive is used for fixing the thread to the fleece. The recovery thread and/or teh fleece is of plasticisable material and is welded together without extraneous matter. The free end of the thread leaves from a centre point in the bottom face of the tampon and has a knot. Prodn. is carried out in an installation having a horizontal conveyor for the wadding fleece, and, in the line of motion, a feeder for the thread, a device for bonding thread to fleece, a shear to cut the thread to length, an arrangement to turn a section of the recovery thread, a parting off arrangement and rolling up device. The withdrawal thread does not tighten up the tampon and extend when pulled for recovery, fewer winding s are therefore necessary than for a tampon in which the thread must tigthen first. The winding of the tampon can be arranged so that the thread extends from the centre of the finished tampon. Prodn. can be carried out much more quickly in an absolutely continuous process.
