A transfer chamber (1) is assigned an identification recess (6) which is limited on the side of the transfer chamber (1) by the transfer door (8) whilst it is limited on the outside by a further transfer door (7). The identification recess (6) is equipped with baffles at least approximately limiting the circumferential contours of a person, in order to prevent the possibility that more than one person will be accommodated therein at the same time. Furthermore, the identification recess (6) has sensing elements, by means of which the body size, head-and-shoulder region and body weight are determined. The data determined are compared with the data stored in coded form on a code card personally assigned to the person in question. Only if the sensed data correspond to the data stored on the code card is the transfer door (8) leading to the transfer chamber (1) opened. Such a device offers a considerable degree of certainty that the checked person gains access to the transfer chamber (1) and therefore access to the protected installation through the further transfer door (2) only when his body data correspond to the data stored on the code card.
