The knitting machine has one set of dial needles and two or more sets of cylinder needles, specifically for jersey knit by cylinder needles and rib knit using both cylinder and dial. One or more needle sets are movable rearward beyond cast-off into inactive position, so that they do not knit while remaining needles knit one or more courses. Specifically needle butts can be selectively transferred from active to inactive cam tracks by actuation of transfer cams, while other transfer cams are operable to return the butts to the active tracks. Simple system with transfer cams selectively operable and functioning without reducing machine speed.
