The signal suppression system for a record player is used to detect parasitic signals, caused by mechanical defects in the record, which produce cracking. A pair of correlated signals are generated using the source signal recorded on the record. These correlated signals are combined so as to attenuate the source signal and to amplify the parasitic signals for detection of the latter. The two correlated signals may be obtained via a stereo playback head providing two output signals corresponding to two distinct recording tracks.
