The hydraulic bolt pre-loading tool is for pulling down the bolts on large i.c. engines, having an external cylinder housing with a face bearing against that on the engine surrounding the nut to be tightened. A tapped annular piston working in the housing screws onto the bolt end, and forms with the housing a pressure chamber with sealing rings, connected to the hydraulic supply. It has two or more hydraulic tensioning mechanisms, whose cylinder housings (19, 24) and annular pistons (20, 25) have identical external dimensions, although the pistons have different internal threads (29, 30). The pistons are coupled together by a connector piece (38, 39) with bosses (39, 40) screwing into them.
