Pneumatic spiked tyres for clear or icy roads - the spikes being kept out of contact with a clear road surface by webs

Pneumatic spiked tyres have the same road holding and braking characteristics on both clear or ice or sleet covered roads in that the spikes which are let into the tyre periphery in axially spaced peripheral arrays are delimited bilaterally by one or more divergently directed supporting webs. In the case of a clear road surface, the webs keep the spikes out of contact with the surface due to high frictional resistance between webs and surface. In the case of an ice or sleet covered surface the reduced coefficient of friction between the webs and the surfaces causes the webs to deflect bilaterally to bring the spikes into contact with the surface.
