The thermal insulation for a cylindrical body, e.g. a pipe consists of helical wound ribbons (18) located on the outer surface of the pipe (2). In order to increase the thickness of the insulation ribbon, it is provided with laterial corrugated folds. If several layers of ribbon are wound onto the pipe, air pockets are prodiced which increase the insulation efficiency. The outside layer of the insulation is produced by a flat ribbon so that a clean surface is obtained. When the insulation is installed, the pipe (2) moves through the centre hole of the ribbon supply reel (10).
