To minimise the danger of fracturing a porcelain insulator (18) due to impulse loads applied to the conductor (20) or conductor clamp (19) at right angles to the insulator axis (22) a damping element (21) is introduced between the insulator top cap (17) and the conductor clamp. If an impulse load is applied the kinetic energy is absorbed in deflecting the damper, and the insulator is saved from damage. Typically the damper is a metal rod of appropriate length and cross section to give the desired energy absoprtion when it is subjected to a blow. The arrangement can be applied to both post and suspension insulators as well as to insulators grouped together, for example suspension insulators in pairs.
