Prepn. of propane-1,1-diphosphonic acids of formula (I) and their salts (where R1 and R2 are each 1-4 C alkyl) comprises reacting beta-alanine, poly (beta-alanine) or an N-alkylated beta-alanine with H3PO3 and POCl3.
