To anchor tufts of thermoplastic material in a ground fabric, to produce a tufting, heat is applied momentarily to the reverse of the material, so that the tuft fibres at the back are bonded at least partially without affecting the ground fabric. Pref. the application of heat to the reverse of the fabric is so momentary that only part of the tufting fibres on the fabric back are melted. A solid solvent material, in particle form, can be applied to the fabric's reverse surface so that when it melts on the application of heat, the fluid dissolves part of the tufting fibres present at the back of the carrier material, which then bond as they solidify. Method is designed for a lagging or coating application, the process bonds the tufts without affecting the carrier material of the ground fabric.
