The appliance is for the application of a protective coating on graphite electrodes. It has two shafts (1, 2), with an axis crossing at an angle of 0-30', positioned on bearings (12), above an adjusting mechanism (4) and a frame (3). One shaft has a drive unit (8). Tools are carried on a stationary support (5) beside the shafts, and are radially movable. The crossing space (11) of the shafts corresponds to the electrode diameter, and the desired rotation- and translation speed. The shafts may be cylindrical, conical, hyperboloid, or a combination of these.
