The root crop harvester has a heading device which is controlled in height from an advance test wheel and is indirectly carried by a machine frame with tandem wheels. The drive of the sensor wheel (12) is branched from one of the wheels of a tipper tandem axle construction (13) of the machine frame (4). This wheel can be pivoted in height with respect to the machine frame. The heading device (5) is driven from the other side of the machine indirectly via a linkage shaft (16) which runs transverse to the machine direction of travel. The linkage shaft (16) is coupled with a take-off shaft (17) of a belt drive (18).
