Methyldichlorophosphine (I) is prepd. by the reaction of methane with PCl3 in the presence of CCl4 at 500 degrees C. 2-7 pref. 3-5 mole % (w.r.t. PCl3) CCl4 is used as reaction initiator. The CCl4 reacts to a degree of 50-80% by variation of the reaction temp. between 550-650 degrees C for constant contact times of 0.1-0.9 pref. 0.3-0.8 s, and the reaction mixt. still contg. 20-50 % CCl4 used is eliminated by condensation. The process gives (I), used in fire-proofing compsns. for fibres and plastic minerals, with good yields and satisfactory rates of conversion.
