Compact nitro-guanidine prodn. with high bulk density - by recrystallisation in presence of (carboxy)alkyl-cellulose, used in propellants

In the prodn. of compact nitroguanidine of high bulk density by recrystallisation from aq. soln., recrystallisation is carried out in the presence of 1-5 wt. % (carboxy)alkylcellulose w.r.t. the nitroguanidine to be recrystallised. The pref. additive is (carboxy)methylcellulose. The prod. is used (in conjunction with HN4NO3) for the mfr. of heterogeneous or composite propellants (gas generators) with a binder content of 5 wt. %. The prod. is very compact and has a rhombic crystal habit. Its bulk density can be up to 0.85 g/ml and it can be moulded by pressing with little binder.
