The substructure is for curtain-hung external wall cladding panels with adjustably spaced corner hanger fittings. These fittings (5) have a vertical retainer aperture, while the assembly elements (7) have paired upward and downward facing vertical retainer elements (9, 10) of matching cross-section. These are horizontally and vertically spaced so that where two panels (2) converge an assembly element is insertable from above into their hanger fittings' apertures with a form-locking effect. The hanger fittings are set at the top corners of the two panels so that the assembly element protrudes at the top, for attachment to the facade (11, 12). Two further panels (4) can then be form-locked in place from above, with their bottom hanger fittings on the assembly element's top retainers.
