The assembly includes a ball biased against the end of the shaft with radial play provided by an annular member which is urged into contact with the bearing housing by a locking ring. Latter has an opening facing the shaft end of smaller dia. than the dia. of the ball and provided with locking claws which are received in corresponding recesses of the housing, the claws providing a releasable fastening. Replacement of worn bearing members is facilitated. Pref. the ball is retained between cylindrical pin supports mounted replaceably in the housing and the end of shaft. Annular member which forms an outer race for the ball is received with a slide fit in a recess of the housing, which is provided with a rebate and a bore for reception of a wick for lubrication of the axial thrust bearing.
