The drainage unit is designed for building in flush with the surface of a road or aircraft runway. It incorporates a U-sectioned gutter unit and a super-imposed cover plate with a number of inlet apertures distributed over the whole width. The cover plate (2) and gutter unit (1) are inseparably joined to each other. The junction may be effected by hard-setting intermediate layers (5), or by anchors. There may be a downward extending apron (9) on the cover plate, to overlap the gutter unit. The gutter can be made of concrete, and the cover plate mainly or wholly of metal.
