Extrusion of metal parts from thick metal strip or plate - using punches in dies with projections which restrict metal flow

Tool set for mfg. a metal workpiece by extrusion, using upsetting tools together with =1 material barrier, which follows the outer contour of the workpiece, and has a positive contour or projection entering the workpiece before and during the extrusion by an amt. matching the thickness by which the extruded prod. exceeds the thickness of the initial material. Used e.g. for the mfr. of parts starting from thick metal strip or plate, e.g. as a connecting rod, in mass prodn. The finished prod. may have sone zones with thickness exceeding that of the initial plate and other zones thinner than the initial plate. A substantial saving in mfg. cost is obtd.
