The cooking plate on top of a stove, suitable for a handicapped person, has a set of heating elements of different shapes and sizes with a raised rim around e.g. sides and front of the unit. A channel (12) sunk below the level of the heating surfaces (11) is then formed all round each surface. Islands (19) formed by sloping sides (18) between the heating surfaces can be used to house switches (30). These can extend above the heating surfaces, and have sloping sides, so that they can be pushed down against springs (34) by sliding a cooking vessel (9) sideways. The periphery of the unit, beyond the raised outer edge, can slope downwards.
